How Osun Gov, Adeleke, Contributed to PDP’s Defeat in Ondo – Gafar Blessing

The much-anticipated 2024 Ondo State governorship election has ended in disappointment for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with the party and its candidate, Agboola Ajayi, suffering a crushing defeat.

The campaign was led by Ademola Adeleke, the Governor of Osun State and PDP’s National Campaign Chairman for the election. However, instead of leading a focused, issue-based campaign, Adeleke’s approach left much to be desired.

The people of Ondo State were left bewildered as Adeleke spent a significant portion of the campaign period indulging in public displays of dancing rather than articulating solutions to the challenges facing the state. Critics have argued that this misplaced focus was a critical factor in the PDP’s poor showing at the polls, as voters sought leaders who could demonstrate competence, seriousness, and a clear vision for the future.

Feelers confirmed that some electorate in the Sunshine State voted against Ajayi because they feared that he could be a replica of the chairman of their campaign, governor of Osun, who rather than devoting his energy to work for the people of Osun in this time of austerity chooses to prioritize his comforts. Records show that Adeleke has spent about N40bn for his food, entertainment and luxury lifestyle in the last two years. He is being criticized in the state for spending N11bn to purchase luxury cars for unproductive politicians while he is reluctant to approve the National Minimum Wage for the struggling workers in the state.

As results continue to trickle in from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it is evident that Ondo voters have rejected both the PDP and its candidate. The absence of a meaningful and impactful campaign strategy has left the party unable to connect with the electorate on issues that matter most, such as economic development, infrastructure, and social welfare.

This development is not just a lesson for Ondo but also a cautionary tale for the people of Osun State as they prepare for their next gubernatorial election in 2026. While Ademola Adeleke might have charmed voters with his boogie dance in the past, the realities of governance demand more than theatrics. Leadership requires intellectual capability, policy-driven strategies, and a commitment to the well-being of the people.

Osun voters are now urged to critically evaluate their choices and prioritize leaders who can deliver measurable progress over those whose campaigns are driven by entertainment. Dancing may bring temporary cheer, but it is no substitute for the hard work and dedication required to lead effectively.

As Ondo turns the page on this election, the message is clear: governance is serious business, and only serious-minded leaders with a clear vision can truly make a difference.
