In a move to accelerate the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), the Federal Government of Nigeria has begun distributing 1,000 CNG conversion kits across key states. This initiative aims to ease transportation costs and reduce the nation’s reliance on expensive fuel.
An official of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, Moses Onate, disclosed this on Friday during an inspection of the CNG kit warehouse in Ibafo, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. He revealed that the distribution had already begun in Abuja, Lagos, and Ogun, with the states receiving 1,000 kits collectively.
Onate explained that 450 kits have already been dispatched to Kaduna and Abuja, while 550 more are headed to Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo. He highlighted the benefits of CNG, noting that it could reduce transportation costs by over 40%. “Fuel prices are now around N1,000 per liter, while CNG costs about N210-N230. The savings will be significant for Nigerians,” he said.
The initiative has received no negative feedback thus far, and with 10 CNG conversion centers already in Lagos, Onate expressed optimism about the program’s success.
Pipeline engineer Austin Nwaodhu, speaking at the warehouse, urged vehicle owners to embrace CNG, citing its lower consumption, environmental friendliness, and reduced emissions compared to petrol.
“CNG is not only cheaper but also better for the environment. This initiative will cut the cost of running vehicles and offer a safer alternative for our communities,” Nwaodhu emphasized.
The Federal Government’s push for CNG conversion comes at a crucial time, as many drivers struggle to keep their businesses afloat amidst skyrocketing fuel prices. The initiative offers a promising solution for cost-effective and eco-friendly transportation across the country.
