Nigerian Government Sacks Top Hajj Official Over Corruption

In a significant move aimed at restoring integrity to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman as the new Executive Chairman of the commission. This decision comes in the wake of allegations of corruption against the former executive Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Jalal Arabi, prompting the government to take decisive action.

Professor Usman, a respected Islamic scholar with academic credentials from the University of Madinah and Peshawar University in Pakistan, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His deep knowledge of Hajj operations, demonstrated during his tenure as Chairman of the Kano State Pilgrims Board, will be invaluable as he oversees the nation’s pilgrimage affairs. His successful management of the largest state pilgrim quota in Nigeria underscores his capability to lead NAHCON effectively.

The appointment is, however, subject to Senate confirmation. President Tinubu has expressed confidence in Professor Usman’s ability to serve with integrity, transparency, and a strong commitment to the nation’s interests.

The sacking of the previous NAHCON official signals the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and its determination to ensure that the commission operates with the highest standards of accountability.

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed the development in a statement released on August 19, 2024.
