Expresses Condolences for Students Killed in Jos Building Collapse
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has urged the Plateau State government to reinforce town planning laws to prevent future tragedies like the recent building collapse in Jos that resulted in the loss of several students’ lives.
Akpabio made these comments during a courtesy visit from Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and some traditional rulers at his office on Tuesday.
Offering his condolences, Akpabio said, “We extend our sympathy for the building collapse. Despite the building not being constructed during your administration, it’s crucial to reinforce town planning laws and closely monitor the building industry.
“Regardless of who is affected, any building that doesn’t comply with regulations or is constructed on waterways should be demolished to prevent such tragedies. We must move beyond respecting the influential individuals and prioritize safety.
“The entire country mourns the loss of these children. On behalf of the 10th Senate, please accept our deepest condolences. We stand with you during this mourning period.”
Governor Mutfwang mentioned that their visit to the National Assembly was also to participate in a public hearing on the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2024. The bill aims to upgrade the institute to a full-fledged university, and the governor expressed hope that Plateau State would host this new university.
