Tinubu to South-South Leaders: Respect Court Rulings to Restore Peace in Rivers

President Bola Tinubu has called on political leaders in the South-South to uphold the rule of law in resolving the lingering political crisis in Rivers State. Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during a meeting with leaders of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the President stressed that peace and stability could only be achieved if all parties respect judicial decisions.

Tinubu revealed that both factions involved in the Rivers political dispute had signed a written agreement but urged stakeholders to ensure its full implementation. He emphasized that his administration remains committed to democratic principles and would not tolerate any actions that undermine the judiciary.

“This is a nation governed by the rule of law. I should not be here as President without the rule of law. I have total confidence in our judiciary,” Tinubu said. “Please go back home and help implement the court rulings within the shortest possible time. I am putting the ball in your court. Help! Privately and openly intervene and counsel the governor. Pursue the path of peace and stability.”

The President assured the delegation that his government is focused on economic recovery and sustainable development, particularly in the Niger Delta region. He described the Niger Delta as “the goose that lays the golden egg” and warned that failing to address its challenges could have dire consequences for national development.

Tinubu also commended the leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), particularly its Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for his efforts in driving regional development. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to major infrastructural projects, including the ongoing coastal road construction and planned seaports in the region.

King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff, Co-Chairman of the PANDEF Board of Trustees, praised the President for his inclusive leadership and commitment to the South-South, assuring him of the group’s support.

Similarly, former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Obong Victor Attah, who chairs PANDEF’s reconciliation committee on Rivers State, urged the President to take further steps in resolving the crisis. He warned that continued instability in the state could pose a threat to national peace.

Attah also lauded Tinubu’s reform initiatives, particularly in devolution of power and economic development, but called for increased focus on infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and fiscal federalism.

The meeting was attended by former governors, lawmakers, ministers, traditional rulers, and representatives of youth and women groups from the South-South.
