Zulum and the Bonds of Genuine Friendship – By Yakubu Ahmed BK

Over the past year and a half, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has made more visits to Kebbi State than any other governor in Nigeria.

The frequency of his presence in Kebbi transcends mere politics; he actively seeks to engage with the happenings here, regardless of the distance from his home in Maiduguri and despite the enormity of the work he is doing to ensure that Borno rises from the ashes of the mindless bloodletting in his state.

Zulum’s visits to Kebbi, while reciprocated, have highlighted the depth of his affection for the state. His admiration for Kebbi is unmistakable and has left no one questioning the authenticity of his admiration and love. Is this a mere coincidence, or does it stem from his inherent nature and character?

The foundation of this deep respect and camaraderie with Kebbi’s Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, lies in their shared behavioral traits and ideological connections. Despite Professor Zulum’s four-year head start as Borno’s governor, the kind of collaboration and mutual understanding that is heralding and manifesting in their relationship today is unprecedented. This harmonious relationship developed only after both men won their elections in 2023, as they found common ground in their histories, challenges, cultural ties, economic interests, and visions for the future of their respective states with an eye on rubbing it and bringing it to bear on the components of the country.

The mutual support between the two governors has become evident at every turn. They have consistently reached out to each other during significant moments, whether joyful or sorrowful, demonstrating a strong commitment to shared experiences.

Their instinctive reactions to each other’s milestones—be it congratulations, condolences, or collective interests—underscore their readiness to engage and support one another in times of need.

Governor Zulum’s recent visit to Kebbi, alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima, to attend the wedding Fatiha of House of Representatives member Bello Kaoje’s daughter, marks his fifth participation in such joyful occasions.

Together, Zulum and Idris have visited each other over ten times, with their deputies also playing a role in this growing bond. This ongoing interaction serves as a beacon of hope, promoting shared interests for the well-being of their constituents. It further exemplifies the necessity for Northern Nigerian leaders to unite and articulate common agendas for the benefit of all citizens.

As Nigerians, we are aware of our diversities, which sometimes highlight our differences stemming from cultural and geographical distinctions. However, we have also recognized that these differences can become a source of strength. By combining our individual capabilities, we can create a powerful, economically vibrant, and strategically important nation that attracts global investment.

Governors Nasir Idris and Babagana Zulum exemplify how leaders can cultivate relationships beyond geographic proximity, fostering understanding and collaboration in their quest to enhance Nigeria’s greatness.
