Nigerian Vice President Shettima, Oyetola, Others Applaud Omipidan for Daring Memoir

The launch of Persona Non Grata, a thought-provoking memoir by seasoned journalist Ismail Omipidan, brought together a host of dignitaries and media professionals on Saturday at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Abuja Continental Hotel. The book, which chronicles Omipidan’s personal and professional journey, has been lauded as a bold commentary on resilience, politics, and power in Nigeria.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and former Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, described the book as a remarkable contribution to Nigeria’s literary and journalistic landscape. “Persona Non Grata is more than a memoir—it’s a window into the complexities of leadership, public service, and the delicate balance of personal convictions in the face of societal challenges. Ismail’s journey is one of unwavering dedication and professionalism,” Oyetola said.

Oyetola recounted his working relationship with Omipidan during his tenure as Governor of Osun State, praising his former Chief Press Secretary for his exceptional commitment to public communication. “His professionalism and integrity stood out, and he has continued to excel as a leading voice in journalism. This book is a testament to his resilience and the lessons he has learned along the way.”

Vice President Kashim Shettima also spoke passionately about the memoir, urging Nigerian journalists to embrace their role as truth-tellers while maintaining objectivity. “There is a fine line between antagonizing a government and speaking truth to power. The latter serves a noble purpose of advancing society, while the former often fades into irrelevance,” the Vice President said.

He lauded Omipidan for using his platform to reflect on the intersections of politics, media, and governance, noting that the book offers a valuable perspective on navigating the complexities of public life.

In his review of Persona Non Grata, Dr. Lasisi Olagunju, a renowned media scholar, described the memoir as a “masterpiece of survival and triumph.” He highlighted the themes of rejection, discrimination, and eventual victory that permeate the book, emphasizing its relevance to Nigeria’s socio-political discourse.

“The book captures Omipidan’s transformation from being labeled unwelcome—a ‘persona non grata’—to becoming a respected figure in journalism and public service. It is a bold exploration of identity, courage, and conviction,” Dr. Olagunju said.

The memoir also sheds light on Omipidan’s encounters with the intricacies of Nigerian politics, from his formative years in Otukpo, Benue State, to his career-defining moments as a journalist navigating the turbulent waters of power and governance.

Speaking at the event, Omipidan expressed gratitude to those who have supported his journey, acknowledging the influence of mentors like Farooq Kperogi and his former colleagues in the media. He explained the book’s title, revealing its origin in a politically charged episode where he was declared “persona non grata” by a sitting governor.

“This book is my attempt to reflect on the lessons of my journey, not just for myself but for the next generation. It is a story of persistence, hope, and the power of staying true to one’s principles,” Omipidan shared.

The event drew an impressive turnout of media professionals, political figures, and literary enthusiasts, all eager to celebrate the courageous narrative and the man behind it. As copies of the book flew off the shelves, attendees were unanimous in their agreement: Persona Non Grata is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s political and journalistic landscapes.
