A police officer, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, has been arrested and detained following the tragic death of a young woman, Ifeoluwa Adekalu, caused by an accidental discharge from his firearm in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The incident occurred on Thursday at Okela Police Station when a bullet from the officer’s gun struck the woman outside a shop opposite the station.
According to sources, the officer was visiting the station and allegedly fired the shot in celebration of a colleague’s promotion. Tragically, the bullet hit Adekalu, who was either passing by after paying her accommodation rent or approaching the station, depending on varying eyewitness accounts.
“The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, she later passed away,” a source revealed.
Confirming the incident, Ekiti State Police Commissioner Adewale Adeniran said the officer involved has been disarmed and taken into custody. “He will face interrogation in line with the Nigerian Police Act,” the commissioner stated.
