Breaking: FG Kicks Off Free Nationwide Train Ride to Ease Yuletide Travel

The federal government has launched a free nationwide train ride initiative to alleviate financial burdens and ensure smooth travel for Nigerians during the yuletide season. The program, running from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, is expected to ferry over 340,000 passengers across key routes.

The Acting Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Ben Iloanusi, inaugurated the initiative at the Kubwa train station in Abuja, where the first train departed for Rigasa, Kaduna State. He emphasized enhanced security measures, streamlined ticketing processes, and orderly boarding to ensure a seamless experience for travelers.

Iloanusi stated, “This free train ride is a significant palliative by the federal government. Passengers are required to book tickets online at no cost and present valid identification at the station. Those unable to book online will be profiled before boarding.”

The initiative spans major routes, including Abuja-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, Port Harcourt-Aba, Lagos-Mass Transit, and Warri-Itakpe. With an estimated 20,000 passengers expected daily, the NRC projects smooth operations, urging travelers to arrive at stations at least 45 minutes before departure.

Despite the commendations from passengers like Isah Slaisu, who hailed the initiative for easing travel costs, there were complaints about ticketing and crowd management. Another passenger, Maria Balogun, criticized the online booking process, alleging staff misconduct and delays.

Responding to these concerns, Iloanusi assured Nigerians that measures would be implemented to address operational gaps in the coming days. He reiterated the government’s commitment to making travel safe, orderly, and accessible throughout the festive season.
