The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has pledged the Senate’s commitment to addressing the challenges facing the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).
Akpabio made the assurance on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the CCB board and management, led by its Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Bello, to his office.
Speaking during the visit, Akpabio described the CCB as a vital government agency responsible for promoting moral rectitude, disciplining public officers, and ensuring accountability. He emphasized the Senate’s strict adherence to asset declaration processes, noting, “We don’t normally clear any public officer in the Senate unless we are assured that the person has attached the acknowledgment form of their asset declaration before the Code of Conduct Bureau.”
In response to complaints of inadequate budgetary allocation, Akpabio assured the CCB delegation that the Senate would advocate for improved funding. He stated, “We will engage those involved in bringing budgetary estimates before the National Assembly to ensure that the Code of Conduct Bureau is adequately funded.”
The Senate President also promised to address issues related to office accommodation, manpower, and logistics, as raised by the CCB Chairman, and affirmed the Senate’s readiness to collaborate with the Bureau to fulfill its mandate.
Dr. Abdullahi Bello, while highlighting the challenges confronting the Bureau, expressed optimism about the Senate’s intervention. He appealed for urgent action to enable the agency to function effectively.
