The House Committee on National Inland Waterways has applauded the transformative leadership of Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), for his exceptional achievements within a short tenure.
During their oversight visit to NIWA’s headquarters in Lokoja, the committee celebrated the strides made under Mr. Oyebamiji’s guidance in revitalizing inland waterways operations across Nigeria.
Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Ojema Ojotu, highlighted the strategic importance of inland waterways in Nigeria’s transportation network, noting their potential to ease road congestion, enhance connectivity, and drive economic growth. He also pointed to challenges such as recurring boat mishaps, flooding, and inadequate infrastructure.
The committee extolled the MD’s innovative approach, including NIWA’s decentralized safety campaigns and collaborative engagements with stakeholders like state transportation commissioners. These initiatives have tackled safety concerns and fostered confidence among waterway users.
Ojotu underscored the urgency of modernizing infrastructure, such as inland ports and navigable channels, and advancing dredging efforts to ensure uninterrupted operations. Mr. Oyebamiji also called for legislative support to strengthen enforcement measures against unsafe practices and counter the negative perception of waterway accidents.
NIWA’s effective utilization of internally generated revenue for administrative and operational needs was also highlighted as a hallmark of Mr. Oyebamiji’s efficient management. The committee expressed optimism about NIWA’s future under his stewardship and assured their unwavering support through legislative and financial backing.
The visit concluded with a shared commitment to advancing Nigeria’s inland waterways sector, unlocking its full potential for economic growth and sustainable development.
