The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has arrested the Manager of a boat operating company, Only God Marine Ltd, following an accident involving a fiber boat owned by the company.
According to NIWA, the fibre boat collided with a wooden boat after veering off its channel on Monday at Imore, Lagos, due to excessive passengers and load onboard as well as the obstructed vision of its skipper ( driver).
The Authority noted that the preliminary investigation suggested that the boat company failed to comply with safety rules guarding boat operation, adding that the arrest of the Manager of Only God Marine Ltd was aimed at ensuring accountability and setting a precedent for strict adherence to waterways regulations to prevent future accidents.
NIWA hinted that further penalties and legal actions may be imposed on the company and the Skipper of the boat, just as it assured the public of thorough investigation to forestall further boat mishaps on our waterways.
