Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared August 20, 2024, a work-free day in honor of Isese Day, a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. This declaration was made through a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to recognizing and preserving indigenous traditions.
According to the statement, the announcement was formalized in a circular released by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo. The circular reaffirms Governor Makinde’s promise made last year to designate August 20 as a work-free day, acknowledging the importance of Isese Day in celebrating the traditional religious practices and cultural values that are integral to the Yoruba identity.
Governor Makinde urged all traditional worshippers, as well as the entire citizenry, to use this special day for reflection and prayers. He called on the people of Oyo State to pray for continued peace, unity, and stability within the state and across the nation. This work-free day not only provides an opportunity for celebration but also serves as a moment to foster communal harmony and cultural pride.
Isese Day, which honors the deities and ancestors revered in Yoruba traditional religion, has been gaining recognition in recent years, with growing advocacy for its observance as an official holiday. Governor Makinde’s declaration is seen as a significant step in this direction, highlighting his administration’s respect for cultural diversity and its efforts to promote inclusivity in Oyo State.
