Bayelsa Boat Tragedy: NIWA Sets Out to Probe Accident’s Cause

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), under the leadership of MD Bola Oyebamiji, has dispatched a team to investigate the root cause of the recent boat accident and ensure the public is kept informed with timely updates.

NIWA extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, near the Ezetu 1 community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

The tragedy, resulting from an engine explosion, sadly claimed the lives of both passengers and crew members.

In a press statement issued on Friday, NIWA’s AGM (Corporate Affairs), Suleiman Makama, expressed solidarity with the Government of Bayelsa State and the bereaved families, offering prayers for the souls of the departed.

Following the incident, NIWA promptly deployed its search and rescue team to investigate the cause and keep the public informed.

NIWA stressed the importance of safety regulations for both boat operators and passengers, including the mandatory use of life jackets on Inland Waterways.

The authority calls on all stakeholders in the maritime sector to prioritize safety and comply with regulations to prevent future tragedies.
